Canadian Citizenship Requirements in 2026

Before you can take the citizenship test, you need to meet several requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Here is a complete checklist of what you need to qualify.

Permanent resident status

You must be a permanent resident of Canada to apply for citizenship. Temporary residents, visitors, and international students are not eligible.

Physical presence requirement

You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) out of the last 5 years before your application date. Days spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person in the five years before becoming a permanent resident may count as half days, up to a maximum of 365 days.

Language requirement

Adults between 18 and 54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French. You can demonstrate language ability through approved language test results, evidence of completing secondary or post-secondary education in English or French in Canada, or other evidence acceptable to IRCC.

Knowledge of Canada requirement

Adults between 18 and 54 must pass the citizenship knowledge test. The test covers Canadian history, government, geography, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The passing score is 75% - you need 15 correct answers out of 20.

Income tax filing

You must have filed income taxes for at least 3 years out of the last 5 years, if required to do so under the Income Tax Act. If you were not required to file taxes, you do not need to have done so.

Prohibition periods

You cannot apply for citizenship if you have been convicted of an indictable offence or an offence under the Citizenship Act in the past 4 years, if you are currently charged with an indictable offence, or if you are under a removal order.

Application process

Submit your application through IRCC's online portal. Include all required documents - proof of physical presence, language evidence, tax records, and two pieces of identification. Current processing times vary - check the IRCC website for the latest estimates. Once your application is approved, you will receive a notice to appear for the knowledge test.
