The Canadian Citizenship Ceremony

The citizenship ceremony is the final step in becoming a Canadian citizen. After passing your knowledge test and meeting all requirements, this is the moment it becomes official. Here is what to expect.

What is the citizenship ceremony?

The citizenship ceremony is a formal event where approved applicants take the Oath of Citizenship in front of a citizenship judge or other presiding officer. Once you take the Oath, you are officially a Canadian citizen. You will receive your Certificate of Canadian Citizenship at the ceremony.

The Oath of Citizenship

The Oath of Citizenship reads: I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, King of Canada, His Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. The Oath is taken in English or French, or in both official languages.

What to bring to the ceremony

Bring your Notice to Appear for the ceremony, your permanent resident card, and any other identity documents specified in your notice. You will surrender your permanent resident card at the ceremony, as you will no longer need it once you become a citizen.

Who can attend

Ceremonies are typically open to family and friends. Check your Notice to Appear for details on guest limits - this varies by location and ceremony format. In-person ceremonies are held at citizenship offices, courthouses, and other government locations across Canada. Virtual ceremonies have also been held in recent years.

After the ceremony

After taking the Oath, you can apply for a Canadian passport. You can also vote in federal, provincial, and municipal elections. Your Certificate of Canadian Citizenship is an important document - store it in a safe place.
